POWER MOBILITY

Where do I start?

We carry a wide variety of scooters and power chairs at HCS. To make it easier for you, we group them into specific categories and criteria.

When making a decision, it's important to ask yourself the following questions:

• What scooter will fit my weight requirements?
• Where will I be using the scooter?
• What range (distance) do I need the scooter to travel?
• How will the scooter be transported for outdoor use?
• Can I safely store my scooter when it's not in use?

Travel or Compact Scooters

Travel and compact scooters are lightweight and foldable, making them ideal for travel, indoor use, and short outdoor distances. They come in 3-wheel and 4-wheel options and are great for driving on smooth terrains. Their small frame makes them easy to store inside a vehicle without a ramp or lift. They usually accommodate users weighing up to 250 lbs.

Mid-Sized Scooters

Mid-sized scooters are popular for outdoor use and come in 3- or 4-wheel options. With a user weight capacity of up to 400 lbs, they offer higher speeds and travel range due to a larger battery. Their frame provides a smoother ride on rough terrains. Despite their size, many mid-sized scooters can be easily disassembled into five pieces for transport or storage.

shop >

Full-sized Scooters

Full-sized and off-road scooters are designed for high-speed, long-distance, outdoor travel and can support user weights up to 450 lbs. Typically offered in 4-wheel options due to their size, they handle rough terrains and inclines with ease due to their heavier frame and larger battery. Full-sized also usually require a ramp for transportation.

Power Chairs

Power chairs are like motorized wheelchairs with a joystick located on the left or right side of the armrest. They suit those who use wheelchairs or have limited dexterity. Options include compact, mid-sized, and full-sized versions. Pick the right one by considering the same criteria as mobility scooters.

Power Chairs

Power chairs resemble motorized wheelchairs and are operated using a joystick located on the left or right side of the armrest. They are commonly used for people who use wheelchairs or have limited dexterity. Like mobility scooters, power chairs are available in compact, mid-sized, and full-sized options. You can select the right one depending on your needs based on the same criteria discussed above.

Factors to consider

3 or 4 wheels?

3-wheel scooters have a smaller turning radius and are ideal for tight spaces or indoor use. 4-wheel scooters provide more stability and are a much better option for the outdoors since the extra wheel provides greater stability on bumpier terrain.

Terrain Options

Are you using your scooter indoors or outdoors? If your model is smaller and more compact, it might not do well on bumpy outdoor terrain during long distances. If you plan to go the distance with your scooter, upgrade to a mid or full-sized model.

Safety Features

Our top three picks are non-tipping wheels, easy to use hand brakes and ease of use on the single hand controller. Other safety features include seatbelts, lights, indicator signals, rearview mirrors and horns.

Battery Range

Know how far you plan to travel per day. Are you a homebody? Or are you an explorer? Some batteries can last 6-8 miles per charge while others can get up to 30 miles.

Comfort

When buying a mobility scooter, prioritize comfort features like headrest, armrest, and tiller. Consider funding options like senior benefits and health coverage to manage costs.

Accessories

Three wheelers are ideal for indoor use and tight spacesare lightweight. Four Wheelers are much better options for the outdoors as the extra wheel gives stability.

Transport

Do you need a scooter that needs to be folded up to transportation or public transit? Are you a jet setter that needs to check in your scooter? Many different options are available.

Weight Capacity

Make sure your scooter or power chair can comfortably accommodate your weight to avoid putting a strain on the battery or frame. This will also minimize the risks of defects and repairs.

Speed & Battery Range

The size of your scooter will determine the speed and battery range. The bigger the unit, the faster and further it will go! The terrain you’re travelling on and the user's weight can also affect your metrics.

Safety Features

Easy-to-use hand breaks, rear anti-tipping wheels, and LED lights are equipped on most models to ensure your safety. You can even add accessories like seat belts and rearview mirrors on select models to increase security.

Accessories

Fully load your ride with optional accessories like a scooter canopy, rear tote, windscreen, cane holder, walker holder, oxygen tank holder, or rearview mirror. Available on select models only.

Frequently Asked Questions

The weight of your scooter depends on the model you purchase and can range from 40 lbs to 330 lbs. Travel and compact scooters are the lightest and often have the ability to conveniently fold or break apart into 5 pieces for easy transportation. A few mid-sized scooters often have this ability as well. Full-sized scooters do not have the capability to break apart, making them the heaviest.

Usually, airlines only allow compact or foldable scooters with a lithium battery for travel. The requirements are often changing and vary depending on the airline. It’s always best to contact your airline and check their most recent requirements.

The range, also known as the distance a scooter can travel, depends on the size of the battery and the weight of the person driving the unit. Battery sizes can range anywhere from 5.2 Ah to 100 Ah. User weights that are closer to the unit's weight capacity, or exceed it, will not be able to travel as far as someone who is well under the unit's weight capacity.

Some smaller scooters have the ability to conveniently fold up or disassemble into 5 smaller pieces for easy transportation. For large units that do not have that ability, a ramp, or scooter trailer may be required for transportation.

Compatible accessories are dependent on the model. Many units are equipped with an accessory bracket on the back. Ask one of our trained professionals about how you can fully load your scooter!
