Description
Evolution Slow Down Brakes are resistance brakes that fit to the walker wheels to help control speed when walking downhill. They are intended for users who cannot operate standard hand brakes reliably, whether because of limited hand dexterity, arthritis, or difficulty applying a hand brake at the moment it is needed.
These are not full stop brakes. Instead of locking the wheels, they apply a constant, gentle resistance so the walker rolls at a more even pace and is less likely to gather speed and pull ahead of the user on a descent. Because the resistance is always present, nothing needs to be squeezed, pressed, or timed. Sold in pairs, one for each wheel.
Features
- Resistance brakes, not full stop brakes
- Constant, gentle resistance applied to the wheels
- Designed to help pace the walker on downhill slopes and reduce the risk of it pulling away from the user
- Designed to support stability for users with limited hand strength or control
- Require no hand action from the user
- Fit a range of Evolution walker models
- Sold in pairs with mounting screws included
How It Works
Each brake bears against a wheel so the walker meets a steady drag as it rolls. On level ground it is barely noticeable. On a slope, where gravity would otherwise accelerate the walker, that same drag works against the acceleration and holds the walker closer to walking pace.
The difference from a hand brake matters. A hand brake is applied at a moment of need and requires grip strength and timing. A resistance brake is passive and continuous, so it is already working before the user would have registered that the walker was speeding up.
Compatibility
Suitable for the following Evolution walkers:
- Xpresso (Mini, Tall, Regular)
- Xpresso LiteÂ
- Xpresso Lite CF (Cable Free)
Directions for Use
- Confirm your walker is one of the models listed above before installing.
- Install one brake per wheel using the supplied screws, following the illustrated installation instructions on the package. Tighten all hardware fully.
- Lift and spin each wheel to confirm the brake makes even contact and the wheel still turns freely enough to roll.
- Test on a flat surface first, then on any slope you use regularly, keeping both hands on the walker.
- Re-check hardware tightness and brake contact periodically.
- Do not rely on these brakes to stop the walker or hold it stationary. They are resistance brakes, not full stop brakes.
- Do not use the walker if a brake is loose, cracked, or contacting the wheel unevenly.
- Do not install these brakes on a walker model not listed above.
- Do not use the walker on stairs or escalators.
