The Evolution Wide Walker with Arm Trough System is a four-wheeled walker supplied with forearm troughs in place of conventional handles, built on the wider Evolution frame with a 400 lbs (181 kg) capacity. It is designed for people who cannot bear weight comfortably through the hands or wrists, transferring load to the forearms through padded troughs to help the user stay upright with a stable base of support.

The wider frame and 21 in (53 cm) seat suit users with a broader gait or who need more seat width and capacity than the standard frame provides. The walker is built on a powder coated cold rolled steel frame with stainless steel and plated fasteners, a solid seat base with a removable waterproof cushion, a large removable wire basket and large polyurethane tires. The trough system is adjustable at five points, the built-in tools mean no separate tools are needed, trough pads are removable and replaceable on their own, and a removable midsection lowers the overall height range for shorter users.

Available in Low Wide and Wide frame heights. The 24 in (61 cm) standard frames are listed separately.

Features

  • Supplied as a complete walker with the forearm trough system fitted
  • Wider frame and seat designed for users with a broader gait or a higher capacity requirement
  • Padded troughs designed to support the forearms and encourage an upright walking posture
  • Multiple adjustment points allow each trough to be positioned to suit the individual
  • Built-in tools, so no separate tools are required for adjustment
  • Can be configured with troughs on both sides, or on one side with a standard handle opposite
  • Can be set up for users with one-sided weakness
  • Trough pads are removable and replaceable independently of the rest of the assembly
  • Removable midsection allows a lower overall setting
  • Scratch resistant powder coated heavy-duty steel frame
  • Solid plastic seat base with a removable fitted waterproof cushion
  • Large removable wire basket
  • Heavy-duty polyurethane tires designed for outdoor as well as indoor surfaces
  • Plastic components designed to withstand temperatures as low as -40 F (-40 C)
  • Corrosion resistant fasteners throughout, stainless steel or plated
  • Compatible with the optional mono-brake system for one-handed braking

How It Works

The forearm rests along the padded channel with the hand forward at the grip, so load is carried through the forearm rather than the palm and wrist. Adjusting trough height, rotation and fore-aft position sets the elbow at a comfortable angle for the user's height and posture. Removing the midsection lowers the elbow pad range. Loop brakes operate the rear wheels for slowing and parking.

Indications

Intended for walker users who cannot grip or load a conventional walker handle and who require forearm support to walk with stability, including users with reduced grip strength or one-sided weakness. The manufacturer describes the Evolution Series as well suited to users with conditions such as Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, arthritis and stroke-related conditions, and the wide frames as suited to heavier users and users with a wide gait.

Directions for Use

  • Have the walker set up and the troughs adjusted by a qualified provider or according to the manufacturer's instructions before first use.
  • Set the trough height so the elbow sits at a comfortable angle with the shoulders relaxed and level.
  • Check that both troughs are set to matching heights when a pair is fitted.
  • Secure every adjustment point using the built-in tools before the walker is loaded.
  • Apply both brakes before sitting on the seat.
  • Check doorway and hallway clearance before use, as the wide frame has a larger footprint than the standard frame.
  • Do not use the walker until every adjustment point has been retightened after any change.
  • Do not sit on the seat while the walker is moving or unbraked.

Safety Information

  • Weight capacity is 400 lbs (181 kg) for both the Low Wide and Wide frames.
  • Do not exceed the stated weight capacity.
  • Do not use the walker if a trough pad, fastener, clamp, wheel or brake cable is loose, cracked or missing.
  • Do not use the arm troughs as a lifting or transfer aid.
  • Do not use the walker on stairs or escalators.
  • Inspect the pads, fasteners, tires and brakes regularly and retighten or service as needed.
