The Dover Robinson Vinyl Urethral Catheter is a sterile, single use straight catheter for intermittent urinary drainage. The 16" (40.6 cm) length is the standard adult size, and the range covers 8 Fr through 18 Fr so the catheter can be matched to the patient rather than the other way round.

The catheter is made from clear PVC (vinyl), which allows urine flow to be observed through the tube wall during the procedure. The tip is a smooth, rounded, closed Robinson tip, also known as a Nelaton tip, with dual staggered drainage eyes set back from the end. Because the tip itself is closed, drainage occurs through those side eyes, and the rounded profile is designed to help reduce friction on insertion. An integral funnel at the drainage end connects to collection equipment.

Vinyl gives the catheter a firmer feel than softer materials, which is designed to aid controlled insertion. The catheter is not made with natural rubber latex. It is supplied sterile and individually, and is intended for single use only.

How It Works

A Robinson catheter drains the bladder through a closed rounded tip with side eyes rather than an open end. Because there is no opening at the very tip, the leading surface presented to the urethra is smooth and continuous, which is designed to help reduce friction as the catheter is advanced. Once the tip passes into the bladder, urine enters through the two staggered side eyes and travels the length of the tube to the integral funnel at the external end.

Staggering the drainage eyes rather than placing them opposite one another is intended to maintain flow if one eye becomes occluded against the bladder wall or by sediment. The French scale describes the outer circumference of the catheter: one French unit equals one third of a millimetre of outer diameter, so an 18 Fr catheter is roughly twice the diameter of an 8 Fr. Larger sizes carry more flow but require a correspondingly larger urethral lumen.

Indications

Sterile, single use hollow catheters for intermittent urinary drainage, including draining the bladder and collecting sterile urine samples. The 16" length is intended primarily for adult anatomy.

Directions for Use

• Open the sterile package only immediately before use.
